Introduction

The 2024 Topps Chrome Tennis release represents the first Topps cards for most players featured in the set. With a mix of legends, rising prospects, and below, it is interesting to see which players collectors value the most.

Popularity in the card market doesn't always directly correlate with on-court results. Factors like first/rookie cards, long-term upside, player appeal, and overall hobby hype all dramatically impact prices and demand.

This list is my personal opinion on the most popular players from 2024 Topps Chrome Tennis. I think it is directionally right, but I'm sure there will be some players and rankings that people disagree with.

Tier 1: The Headliners

1. Carlos Alcaraz

Alcaraz is easily the product chase in my opinion, representing the best combination of current level & future potential.

One factor that does bring Alcaraz slightly down is that while these are his first Topps cards, they are not his first officially licensed cards (the '22 NetPro release holds that distinction).

However, even though it is not his first release, Alcaraz's dynamic play style and joy for the game make him a collector's dream (especially since his biggest rival on the court, Jannik Sinner, isn't featured in Topps releases).

Apart from Novak Djokovic, Alcaraz is also the only player big enough to appeal to both hardcore tennis fans and broader sports card collectors.

2. Alexandra Eala

Eala is probably the biggest surprise of this list, especially given her resume is nowhere near most other players featured here. However, as mentioned before, the hobby doesn't always price solely based on accomplishments or even potential, and Eala is the biggest example of this.

Eala carries the weight of the Philippines behind her and has extremely strong international collector support. These are also her first Topps cards, as well as her first officially licensed tennis cards.

While Eala is probably the riskiest bet on this list, she has been playing well recently and her stock could improve even more if she wins any big titles.

3. Novak Djokovic

Novak doesn't need much explaining, and these being his first Topps cards carries a lot of weight with collectors.

While Djokovic does have plenty of tennis cards released from other manufacturers, his first Topps cards will still have plenty of demand.

Djokovic’s cards remain incredibly desirable simply because of who he is. Unlike the younger players on this list whose markets are driven heavily by projection, Djokovic’s hobby value is set already with his legacy, accomplishments, and global recognition.

Tier 2: The Rookies (and Emma)

4. Mirra Andreeva

Most of Mirra Andreeva's high prices are driven by her being touted as a future major champion, but she has also seen quite a lot of success given that she is still just 19 years old. While she hasn't fully broken through yet at any major, being a consistent presence in the top 10 as a teenager is super impressive.

Similar to baseball card prospecting, collectors always love to bet on young breakout stars with long careers potentially ahead of them. While it is risky to pay high prices for prospects, it can pay off in the long-run if you are right about their careers.

Like the next two players on this list as well, this being Andreeva's first Topps card and being labeled as a rookie card really help to increase the value.

5. Ben Shelton

Shelton is being hyped as the next potential American Grand Slam Champion, and he is currently ranked within the top 10 as a 23-year old. With a huge lefty serve and forehand combo, Shelton can often hit other players off the court (not named Sinner & Alcaraz).

Shelton's market is heavily based on projection as well, but he has incredible upside and a personality to match. His game is exciting, he’s very marketable, and American players almost always receive additional hobby attention.

This also marks his first Topps card and is labeled as a rookie card, which again plays a big role in increasing the value.

6. Jakub Menšík

While not as hyped as Andreeva and Shelton, Mensik is someone who is considered to be among the biggest threats to potentially break the Sinner & Alcaraz duopoly. I would say Shelton, Mensik, Arthur Fils, Rafael Jodar, and Joao Fonseca are considered to be the five most likely at this time to make a run.

Mensik has a huge game and moves well for a big player, and he's already on the verge of entering the top 10 at just 20 years old. He definitely needs a deep run at a major to really cement his status, but for now he's one of the highest potential players included in this set.

Mensik's card in this set also includes the rookie designation.

7. Emma Raducanu

Raducanu continues to be one of the most collectible women’s players in the hobby despite inconsistent results since her US Open win. At least part of her popularity is likely due to her model-like appearance, but that major win is also carrying a lot of weight for her still.

It remains to be seen whether she can make more deep runs at majors, but she's only 23 years old, so there is time provided she can get back to full health.

Tier 3: Established WTA Stars

8. Aryna Sabalenka

The number one player on the WTA, Sabalenka's popularity continues to grow as she wins more and more big titles. This also representing her first appearance in a Topps set as well makes her card a big deal for collectors.

9. Iga Świątek

Iga has been in a bit of a slump recently, but it's hard to deny her career accomplishments at just 24 years old. Already a six-time major champion, she is the current active leader in major titles for women.

While Iga has had cards with Upper Deck in the past, this is her first release in Topps sets.

10. Elena Rybakina

Rybakina's card market is kind of like her on-court demeanor, in that it doesn't quite match the level of her actual play. While she does have a very strong collector's market still, given that she is the number two player on the WTA right now (and you could make an argument for number one), there is still room to grow, especially compared to Sabalenka.

In addition to this being her first appearance in a Topps set, it is also labeled as such on the card as a 1st, which is an added bonus for collectors.

Just Missed the Cut

Honorable Mention: Alexander Zverev

While Zverev is a consistent presence deep in majors, it is tough to ever see him winning one (given his propensity to choke). This fact, combined with his off the court allegations, definitely take away from his popularity within the hobby.

Even though he is ranked #3 in the world and this is marked as his 1st Topps card, Zverev can't quite break into the top 10 of my list. I also think his popularity is a bit limited given that he's already 29 years old, and collectors view him more based on his existing resume vs. future potential.

Honorable Mention: Naomi Osaka

Osaka still carries massive global recognition and crossover appeal, especially in Japan. However, she is definitely nowhere near what she was at her peak, and has fallen into more of a really good player vs. a generational one.

If she ever regains her major winning form, it's definitely possible her cards could resurge, but for now she also remains an honorable mention. Osaka has also had quite a few cards with Upper Deck in the past, so that takes a little bit of shine off despite these being her first Topps cards.

Honorable Mention: Daniil Medvedev

Similar to Zverev (although notably, with a major championship on his resume), Medvedev seems to fall more in the next-tier, and is no longer judged based on his future potential. Medvedev has been in good form recently though, so if he can pick it up and make a deep run at another major, it is possible his stock could increase.

Honorable Mention: Coco Gauff

Coco is one of the biggest names in all of tennis and would easily be on this list in the top 10 if it weren't for the fact that she was the biggest athlete featured in the 2021 Topps tennis release.

Coco was the product hit in 2021, which means that these 2024 cards are not her first with Topps as they are with most other players.

Honorable Mention: Arthur Fils

While not on the level of Coco Gauff, Arthur Fils is another player with huge potential, and he has been in good form recently. I would've featured him in the Ben Shelton / Jakub Mensik range if this had been his first card, but he was also featured in the 2021 Topps tennis release.

For Fils and Coco collectors, cards from the 2021 release will likely always hold more weight than the 2024 versions.

Honorable Mention: Jack Draper

Jack Draper has everything required to be close to the top of this list, but injuries have slowed his momentum over the past year or so. He rose to as high as #3 in the world, is still just 24 years old, is one of the best-looking players on tour, and this is marked as his 1st Topps card.

Assuming Draper is able to get back to full health and recover the form he had prior to his injuries, there is no doubt that Draper will climb up this list in the future (potentially into the top 5).

Closing Thoughts

One of the most interesting parts of any sports cards is that collector demand doesn’t always perfectly mirror rankings and actual performance.

Sometimes collectors prioritize first cards and long-term upside. Other times, player's appearances, global popularity, and nationality can play a major role in shaping demand.

That's part of what makes sports card collecting so interesting, but also so difficult to predict, as you never know what player is going to break out next. While the biggest driver does remain on-court performance, this only matters to a certain degree unless a player reaches the overwhelming level of success from players like Sinner, Alcaraz, and Djokovic.

However, given that Topps is the biggest manufacturer in sports cards and this 2024 Topps Chrome Tennis release marks the first Topps cards for many of the biggest tennis players, it is always fun to try and identify which cards are most desired right now, and who may be most desired in the future.
